Athens Comprehensive Plan Neighborhood Planning Open House Meetings Are Scheduled for June 2018

Athens, Ohio—City of Athens planner Paul Logue has announced that a series of neighborhood planning meetings have been scheduled in June to gather input on neighborhood issues and topics for the city’s comprehensive pan. These neighborhood open houses are designed to better understand each neighborhood's unique planning issues. These interactive meetings will allow neighborhood residents to share their thoughts and ideas on topics including traffic, active transportation, assets, anchors, development, and more. Participants can stop in for their neighborhood open house workshop anytime within the scheduled time. Meetings dates and locations are as follows: Far East Side Neighborhood Meeting: Thursday June 7 from 11 AM to 1 PM in Room B at the Athens Community Center and from 6-8 PM in Room C of the Athens Community Center. Near East Side Neighborhood Meeting: Tuesday June 12 from 11 AM to 1 PM and then from 5 to 7 PM at the Athens Public Library large meeting room. North Side Neighborhood Meeting: Thursday June 14 from 11 AM to 1 PM and then from 5 to 7 PM at the Highland Park pavilion. West Side Neighborhood Meeting: Tuesday, June 26 from 11 AM to 1 PM and then from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM at ARTS/West. South Side Neighborhood Meeting: Thursday, June 28 from 11 AM to 1 PM and then from 5 PM to 7 PM in the Wilson Room at the Ohio University Inn. The city’s current comprehensive plan was adopted by Athens City Council in February of 2007. The comprehensive plan process will provide the community with the opportunity to help plan for future land use, development, and infrastructure within the city. The update will establish a community vision, perform a community inventory, and identify goals and recommendations to address neighborhoods, corridors, and general community initiatives to enhance the city. The comprehensive plan is a tool for future decision making to help plan for the physical growth, development, and redevelopment of Athens. The plan aims to help achieve long term goals and objectives within the context of the vison. The process will include several community-wide planning meetings and neighborhood level meetings. Participants will also be provided with tools to conduct their own planning meeting using a meeting-ina-box technique. Social media and online surveys will also be utilized to gather information for the plan. Those who are interested in updates on the plan including meeting announcements, surveys, and general information are encouraged to email the planners at to be added to the comprehensive plan contact list.
