The City of Athens announces that it is transitioning to paper yard waste bags in order to have a 100% compostable waste stream. The city will change from resident-provided plastic bags to City-provided paper bags beginning February 1st. The 30 gallon paper bags will be available for purchase at the same price as the current stickers ($1.50 ea.) beginning January 19, 2016, at the Utility Billing Office, Code Office, and front desk at the Community Center. As of March 1st, 2016, the city will only accept yard waste in the city-provided paper bags, but city residents who are users of the yard waste program will still use the stickers to attach to bundles of tree limbs and sticks. If users would like to trade in their stickers for the paper bags, they should go to one of the locations listed above. More information is available at www.ci.athens.oh.us.
