[ARCHIVED] Athens Fire Department: Check bathroom exhaust fans

AFD Truck at fire station

The Athens Fire Department would like to remind you to check bathroom exhaust fans installed in your homes and places of businesses. Please, make sure they are properly maintained and cleaned per manufactures’ recommendations. Lint and filth often accumulate on the fan’s

components leading to overheating. Often times, simply blowing out the dirt with air, or using a vacuum to pull the lint away from the fan will help prevent overheating. Make sure the electric has been turned off to the fan prior to cleaning and maintaining.

At approximately 1120 Tuesday, May 24th, the Athens Fire Department responded to a structure fire located at 7 Cardinal Lane.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and overhauled. Estimated loss was approximately $50,000. The fire began in the bathroom vent fan and spread to the attic.

No injuries or casualties.
