PUBLIC ART PROSPECTUS

Request for Proposals

Project Name:  Athens' Poet Laureate 2018

  1.  I.RFP Project Summary 

The City of Athens has allocated  $2000.00 for the appointment of a Poet Laureate for a term of 1 year.

Art as defined by the committee:  At its core, Art is a product of human creativity that is aesthetically pleasing and can encompass diverse methodologies and mediums.  Art can refer to the visual arts including painting, sculpture, architecture, and photography, can encompass applied arts that may include architecture and landscaping, and decorative arts that may be functional in nature.  Above all, any work that falls within the definition of Art must exhibit quality of concept, execution and craftsmanship

RFP SUBMISSION DEADLINE:  All submissions must be hand-delivered or received no later than January 19th, 2018 at the ARTS/West office located at 132 W. State St.  Athens, OH 45701. Submissions may be sent electronically to amac@ci.athens.oh.us.  

Athens Municipal Arts Commission (AMAC) Background:  AMAC establishes ad hoc committees to consider all arts projects.  It is such a committee that has been formed for this project.  After reviewing submissions and interviewing candidates, this committee will make a recommendation to AMAC, who will present the recommendation to the City Council.

III. Project Description:

A. Overview:  The prospectus is centered around the selection of a Poet Laureate to represent the City Of Athens

B. Specifications:  The Poet Laureate will write and present in person at a minimum of 6 events of local importance such as national holidays, local celebrations or award ceremonies, special school events.  Proposal submissions should reflect the broad spectrum of the population of Athens. C.  Budget:  The budget recommendation is for $2,000 per year.  This amount is to include expenses incurred by the poet.

IV. Selection Process:  Selection will be made by  an  AMAC ad-hoc committee consisting  of 3-4  members from the poetry community and one from AMAC.  The finalists will be selected according to the proposal, prior work, and ability to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.  The selection committee will convene, review the applications, interview finalists , and recommend an appointment as Poet Laureate.  

The Selection Committee reserves the right to issue a second call to artists if the proposals submitted do not demonstrate the factors listed below. The committee also reserves the right to reject all proposals.    The following factors will be considered when reviewing submissions:

Quality of body of work

Appropriate for and reflective of the community of Athens

The selected poet's proposal  will be forwarded to the Athens Municipal Arts Commission which will accept or reject the recommendation.  If accepted AMAC will present the recommendation to the Athens City Council. The poet selected will then enter into an agreement with the City of Athens.  The job performance will be overseen by  Safety Service Director.

V.  Project Timeline: (The committee reserves the right to change the timeline without notice.) 

Dec. 15, 2017:  Notification/Announcement to Artists

Jan 19, 2018: Proposals DUE (Receipt Deadline)

Committee to review proposals the week of Jan 22-26. 

AMAC Ad-Hoc Committee  to meet with finalists for interviews and presentations of samples of candidates work during week of January 29 – Feb. 2.  

   By February 14th, 2018:  Results Announced

February 15, 2018:  Commencement of tenure

B. Presentation -  Application Content:  To be effectively reviewed for consideration, the application should contain a portfolio including

1. Selections from your Body of Work

2. Professional Resume/ Vita

3. Professional References - At least three professional references who have an intimate knowledge of your work.  Letters of support are to be supplied by two of these.  Letters can be submitted electronically.  Include complete address and phone/email for each reference.

4. Optional Relevant Experience and Qualifications Support Information:   Up to three selections of supporting materials (reviews, news articles, essays, etc,)

5. Project Proposal (Not to exceed two pages):Describe your overall concept for a year tenure as Poet Laureate, outlining the relevance to the city of Athens, etc. 

6. Self Addressed Stamped Envelope S.A.S.E.:For return of materials.  Only submissions with a S.A.S.E. will be returned; all others become the property of AMAC ad-hoc Committee.  The Art Selection Committee and its consultants assume no responsibility for loss or damage to submissions.
