The first well was located about 4,400 feet west of the Court House and about 2,000 feet north of the Hocking River, in the vicinity of the present West State St. well field.
By 1954, the well system had expanded to supply a daily water usage of about 1.3 million gallons.
The current well water system supplies enough water to meet the daily water usage of approximately 2.5 million gallons. Drinking water is supplied to the City of Athens, The Plains and some surrounding rural customers.
